SUMMARY:Coop: A Story of an Amish Conscientious Objector
DESCRIPTION:Coop: A Story of an Amish Conscientious Objector \nA Play About Courage and Conviction by Iowa Poet Laureate Mary Swander \nIf you’ve ever questioned the ethics of waging war\, you’ll want to see this play. Coop historical fiction\, based on the true story of an Amish conscientious objector who boarded a train during WWII to fight fires in Colorado in lieu of picking up a gun. Unexpectedly\, he and other conscientious objectors—a Mennonite\, a Quaker\, a Swiss Brethren\, a Hutterite—are led off the train and illegally interred in a chicken coop for the duration of the war. \nAs he writes imaginary letters home to his mother\, he’s afraid\, yes. But he meets his fear with courage—and faith in his conviction that violence should be met by turning the other cheek. \nThis object theater drama stars Iowa City veteran actor Rip Russell and uses everyday props to portray a young man’s courage and conviction in response to persecution. Beautiful Amish hymns\, sung a capello\, form part of the sound track. \nAuthor\, poet\, and playwright Mary Swander lives among the Amish in Kalona\, Iowa\, and is known for her best-selling book\, Out of This World. Her play Map of My Kingdom\, about farm succession\, was a hit when it played in Fairfield in 2019. \nAfter the play there will be a Q&A session with Swander\, actor Rip Russell\, conscientious objectors from Southeast Iowa\, and Linda Egenes\, author of Visits with the Amish. \nRecommended for ages 12 and older. \nFind out more at the Iowa Source and the Fairfield Cultural Alliance website. \n  \nMade possible by a grant from the Fairfield Cultural Alliance and generous donations from AERON Lifestyle Technology\, Inc; Susan and Bob Daniels; Edward Jones and Company; Everybody’s Whole Foods; Fred and Shelley Gratzon and Sillycorn Valley Theatrics; Iowa State Bank and Trust Co; Libertyville Savings Bank; LISCO; and MidWestOne\, a division of Nicolet National Bank. SUMMARY:Garrison Keillor Tonight
DESCRIPTION:Garrison Keillor Tonight is an evening of stand-up\, storytelling\, audience song\, and poetry. One man\, one microphone. There are sung sonnets\, limericks and musical jokes\, and the thread that runs through it is the beauty of growing old. Despite the inconvenience\, old age brings the contentment of LESS IS MORE. Your mistakes and big ambitions are behind you\, nothing left to prove\, and small things give you great pleasure because that’s what’s left. (“I was unhappy in college because it was a requirement for an intellectual\, but then I went into show business and discovered that people won’t pay to be made unhappy\, their kids will do it for free.”) \nThere is the News from Lake Wobegon\, a town booming with new entrepreneurs\, makers of artisanal firewood and gourmet meatloaf\, breeders of composting worms\, and dogs trained to do childcare. But some things endure\, such as the formation of the Living Flag on Main Street\, citizens in tight formation wearing red\, white or blue caps\, and Mr. Keillor among them\, standing close to old neighbors\, Myrtle Krebsback (“Truckstop”) and Julie Christensen (“Bruno The Fishing Dog”) and Clint Bunsen. And an acapella sing-along with the audience singing from memory an odd medley of patriotic songs\, pop standards\, hymns\, and ending with the national anthem. \nCall our Box Office at (641) 472-2787 for discounted group rates!

Well\, it didn’t really\, but our story takes you on a frivolous frolic through the French countryside. The Ogres garden in the Mushroom patch while the Corn and Potato spies report back to Madame Gothel. Frenchy and his intense friends\, the Wood Elves\, do their best to help Rapunzel escape the grasp of Madame Gothel. The lost Prince\, Rapunzel’s parents\, and her friends the Unicorns try to help. Just when you think it’s safe to cross the bridge\, a Troll and Three Billy Goats Gruff get in the way. It doesn’t help that the Three Bears (or is it four) confuse Rapunzel with Goldilocks and chase her through the forest. Add to that the Gremlins trying to play tricks on everyone\, and you have chaos! Well\, it’s not that bad because the Pixies foil the Gremlins’ plans most of the time. In short\, Rapunzel and all the rest of the characters tell a silly tale of personal triumph and friendship. \nSPECIAL WORKSHOPS \nTBD
