It is a love letter to education. The former Secretary of Labor might be famous for his public service\, best-selling books\, and viral social media posts\, but he always considered teaching his true calling. Now\, after over 40 years and an extraordinary 40\,000 students\, Reich is preparing for his last class. \nOver the course of the film\, Reich confronts the impending finality\, and his own aging\, with increasing candor\, introspection\, and\, ultimately\, emotion. He displays a rawness of feeling he has never shared publicly before. Drawing on his lifetime in politics\, he uses his class\, “Wealth and Poverty\,” to offer us all a deeper look at why inequalities of income and wealth have widened significantly since the late 1970s\, and why this poses dangerous risks to our society. \nOne thousand students fill the biggest lecture hall on the UC Berkeley campus\, the last class to receive Reich’s wisdom and exhortations not to accept that the world has to stay the way it is. DESCRIPTION:This performance is presented by Fairfield Concert Association and is not part of the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center’s 2025-26 Season. Learn more about Fairfield Concert Association. \nFREE ADMISSION \nThe Southeast Iowa Band (SEIB) is a limited size 50-piece regional wind/percussion ensemble sponsored by Iowa Wesleyan University (IWU). We prepare a program with a variety of music—classical\, pops\, show tunes\, marches\, and folk music—presented in an entertaining fashion. \nThe band is an outlet for regional musicians seeking to maintain their skills at the highest level\, and for qualified IWU and high school performers. Most programs are put together in a series of 5 Sunday night rehearsals. \nMany of the SEIB members perform and teach professionally throughout the region. Much of the group includes adults who travel long distance because they are dedicated to performing in a band of the highest quality. \nThe SEIB is under the direction of Robert McConnell who first started working with the group in the fall of 1982 and Dr. Michael Knight on the music faculty of Iowa Wesleyan. The directors give the audience some dialogue and occasional musical demonstrations that enhance the program.

HOWARD is the author of four books\, including Making Piece: A Memoir of Love\, Loss\, and Pie; the cookbook\, Ms. American Pie; and her latest release\, World Piece: A Pie Baker’s Global Quest for Peace\, Love\, and Understanding. She has written for The New York Times\, Real Simple\, and Country Living\, among many other publications. She has given a TEDx Talk on the healing powers of pie\, and is a regular commentator for her local NPR affiliate in Macomb\, Illinois. From 2010 to 2014\, she lived in the iconic American Gothic House in Eldon\, Iowa\, where she ran the Pitchfork Pie Stand. In 2015\, she embarked on a round-the-world journey teaching pie classes in nine countries to promote world peace. As a widow who understands grief and the importance of building community\, Howard responded to the Sandy Hook Shooting in 2012 by organizing 60 volunteers to bake 250 pies for the residents of Newtown\, Connecticut. Her story has been featured on CBS This Morning\, CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360\, BBC\, NPR\, the Hallmark Channel\, the History Channel\, in the Los Angeles Times\, Forbes\, Reader’s Digest\, and more. She divides her time between an Iowa farm and Los Angeles\, and continues to write\, bake pie\, and advocate for a better\, kinder world.
