SUMMARY:Steinway Piano Spotlight Series: Eugene Gaub
DESCRIPTION:A Fairfield favorite performer\, Pianist Eugene Gaub is Professor of Music at Grinnell College and an internationally sought after soloist\, recently appearing in London\, Quebec\, Chicago\, and beyond\, with a specialty in baroque and classical-romantic composers. \nThe Barhydt Organ Spotlight Series features master organists and pianists that show our beautiful Barhydt Organ and Steinway grand piano at their finest. Admission to all performances is free! Voluntary donations will be accepted at the door ($10 suggested). \nMore About the Performer \nEugene Gaub is Professor of Music (Senior Faculty Status) at Grinnell College\, where he taught music theory and courses in music history focused on opera\, as well as piano\, from 1995 to 2022. Along with his wife\, violinist-composer Nancy McFarland Gaub\, he founded and directed the Roycroft Chamber Music Festival in East Aurora\, New York from 1994 to 2016. A graduate of the Juilliard School\, he holds a doctorate and performer’s certificate from the Eastman School of Music. \nHis New York debut took place at age 22 at Lincoln Center in a performance of Bartók’s First Piano Concerto with the Juilliard Orchestra. Other notable performances include recitals at New York’s Weill Recital Hall and at Washington’s Kennedy Center and National Gallery of Art. His performance of Mozart’s Concerto in G Major\, KV 453 with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra was named one of the year’s best by the Buffalo News. During the Covid lockdown\, he learned the Prokofiev Third Piano Concerto\, which he performed for the first time in 2022 with the Grinnell Symphony. \nWhile living in Fairfield from 2002 to 2022\, Gene sang with the Chamber Singers of Southeast Iowa for most of that time. He now lives in Boulder\, Colorado.

SUMMARY:Barhydt Organ Spotlight Series: Abby Chen
DESCRIPTION:This Spring\, we welcome Abby Chen for her first appearance on the Sondheim stage! A seasoned performer\, Yu-Hsiang Abby Chen is an award-winning organist who regularly can be heard ministering through the historic Krapf Organ for St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City. Currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Iowa\, under the direction of Dr. Gregory Hand\, Abby also serves as a teaching assistant\, offering organ lessons to non-majors and undergraduate secondary students. \nAbby earned a Master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music\, under the direction of McNeil Robinson\, and she holds a Performance Diploma from Indiana University\, where she studied with Dr. Janette Fishell. While in Indiana\, she also served as Organist at Northwood Christian Church\, Indianapolis. \nA native of Taiwan\, Abby has served as Executive Director of American Guild of Organists\, Taiwan Chapter\, and was a lecturer at Taiwan Theological College and Seminary. Her album\, “Singing Organ in the Rainy Night: Hear The Oldest Organ in Taiwan” won both Best Performance and Best Recording honors at the 30th “Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music” in Taiwan. \nThe Barhydt Organ Spotlight Series features master organists and pianists that show our beautiful Barhydt Organ and Steinway grand piano at their finest. Learn more about Fairfield Concert Association. \n\n  \n\n“DAZZLING CELLO AND SOARING TENOR VOCALS” – NPR Music\n\n\n BRANDEN & JAMES bring the soulful timbre of James on his cello combined with Branden’s emotional and powerful vocals\, creating a sound that leaves audiences feeling moved and inspired. They have “become a brand-name in the classical-crossover music world alongside the likes of Josh Groban\, The Piano Guys\, and Jackie Evancho.” The Bay Area Reporter          \n“Hardly a supporting player\, but\, rather\, a true co-creator and co-star” (Robert Windeler\, NY Times Music Correspondent) Australian cellist James\, began creating arrangements of familiar tunes that make you listen as you’ve never heard them before. Branden\, a former finalist on America’s Got Talent & resident tenor at The Metropolitan Opera\, Lyric Opera of Chicago\, and Los Angeles Opera; recently penned a memoir entitled\, Lyrics of My Life which entered Amazon Books new releases at #9. It was published by Simon & Schuster in September\, 2020. \nPowerhouse vocalist Effie Passero rocketed to fame on the ABC reboot of popular talent show American Idol. Passero impressed both the judges and fans of the show\, most notably on her standout performance of ‘Barracuda’\, the classic track by rock group Heart with Judge Luke Bryan favourably comparing her vocals to Ann Wilson. Passero was an early favourite in the show and placed top 20\, and since then she has performed across the globe and has worked on various different studio projects including her debut album of original songs\, Better.
